Every Kid Needs a Champion

It is important to hear the reality that you don’t always love your students, and that students don’t always succeed in our classes. BUT doing things like writing ‘+2 :)’ on someone’s test instead of ‘-18’ changes a student’s perception of themselves. It also brought up the idea that we should be aiming to leave a legacy with our students. We want them to remember us making a difference in their day to day and help them have the best foundation to thrive in society.

Canada’s Dark Secret Documentary

A powerful documentary that confronts the realities of Canada’s residential school system and the enduring trauma inflicted upon Indigenous communities. It reveals the systemic violence, cultural erasure, and abuse that were sanctioned under policies of assimilation. For educators, this film is essential viewing—it challenges us to reckon with the true history of the land we teach on, and to better understand the intergenerational impacts of colonialism.

How to Apply the SAMR Model

The SAMR model follows the flow pattern as Bloom’s taxonomy (reference the outermost circle of the Padagogy Wheel below for a good visual) and more clearly connects how integration of technology is altering the coursework of the class. Although it’s connected, it is very different to Blooms taxonomy, where we look at what level of learning the technology facilitates.

I respectfully acknowledge that I live and work on the unceded territory of the Lək̓ʷəŋən Peoples, including the Songhees Nation, Esquimalt First Nations, and the W̱SÁNEĆ peoples. I recognise that their historical relationship with the land continues to this day and am deeply grateful for the opportunity to live, teach, and learn on these lands. I am continually learning about their cultures, traditions, and histories and will make a conscious effort to embed meaningful connections between the First People’s Principles of Learning and local knowledge into my classes and pedagogy.
